What makes a cookbook “clean?”
“Clean” cookbooks are cookbooks where the authors focus on the power of fresh, nutrient dense, plant-based foods––tapping into the healing properties that Mother Nature provides.
Rather then focusing on subjects like weight loss, clean food chefs tend to focus on healthy eating as a holistic lifestyle choice. And, understanding that this is a deviation from conventional western diets, they provide helpful tips, plans, and tricks on incorporating this new approach to food into your life.
Many of these authors have used this lifestyle to heal or manage their own health issues, from acne, to Epstein-Barr Virus reactivation, to a stage four cancer diagnosis where the doctors recommended removing most of her internal organs.
She said, “no thank you.” Then found her way to Whole Foods.
Now, she, and other authors here, share their journeys of healing through food, providing their readers with inspiring stories of transformation, and serving as guides to living a truly new life.
What makes a cookbook “Clean Beauty”
Some of the authors on this list, like Kimberly Snyder and Candice Kumai, are categorized as clean beauty because they craft their actual recipes to address beauty concerns. But I have found that a wonderful by-product of following the tips, teachings, and recipes of all of these authors is an improvement in physical radiance––clearer skin, thicker hair, longer nails, and a natural vibrancy that is extremely attractive.
Their recipes help us harness the power of clean eating to achieve a gorgeous glow that originates and radiates from within.
That is why these categorize as clean beauty cookbooks.

The Beauty Detox Foods
by Kimberly Snyder
I found Kimberly at the beginning of my journey, and I’m so glad I did. She came to food as medicine after struggling with acne, digestion issues, and general lack of vitality that she originally attributed to her travels and (partying) lifestyle.
She wasn’t wrong.
A wake up call led her to realize that her diet, even what she thought was “healthy,” was actually, in Kimberly’s words, “polluting my body with toxins.” She goes on to write:
“…food is medicine…The best way to bring out your natural beauty is not through artificial creams and coverups, but through fresh, nourishing, nutrient-dense foods.”
In The Beauty Detox Foods, Kimberly masterfully combines the worlds of beauty and nutrition, emphasizing the power of plant-based foods in promoting beauty from within.
This book reads like an encyclopedia for beauty-enhancing food. In it, Kimberly individually highlights the most powerful foods for enhancing one’s physical glow, and explains exactly how it does it.
Then, her approach focuses on incorporating these beauty-enriching ingredients into your daily meals, with recipes like her famous “Glowing Green Smoothie” and detox salads, both packed with nutrients that specifically work wonders for skin health.
All of this works in tandem with her focus on healthy digestion to supercharge healing hormones with food.
The Beauty Detox Solution
by Kimberly Snyder
The first book was so good, I had to get the next one. Continuing her quest for holistic beauty, Kimberly Snyder's The Beauty Detox Solution offers a comprehensive guide to achieving beauty and wellness inside out. Not as much of an ingredient encyclopedia as the first, this cookbook provides valuable beauty tips, meal plans, and lifestyle practices to support your journey to glowing skin.

Crazy, Sexy, Kitchen
by Kris Carr
Remember the story I told up top about the woman who refused her Doctor’s cancer treatment plan and ended up at Whole Foods? Meet Kris Carr, whose inspiring story of overcoming a rare form of liver cancer led her to champion plant-based nutrition as a cornerstone of healing.
Crazy, Sexy, Kitchen is a testament to Kris’s vibrant approach to food as a source of healing, vitality, and well-being.
This cookbook is a treasure trove of fun and innovative nutrient dense recipes that tantalize your taste buds and have that beautiful by-product of catering to your beauty needs.
And this from a woman who once said that she knew so little about vegetables before she got sick that she didn’t even know they went bad. In her words:
“I had read someplace that leafy greens were good for you. So I got all of them. But I didn't realize that they go back after a few days. My refrigerator stunk.”
Of the superfood ‘kale’ she said this: “I love kale, now. But before, it looked like a scary weed. And I didn't know what would kill me first, the damn kale or the cancer.”
Six books and four wellness programs later…I guess she learned:)
Kris’s story proves, no matter were you start, you can learn to revolutionize your life through clean eating and holistic health.
Clean Green Eats
by Candice Kumai
Named “The Golden Girl of Wellness” by both ELLE and Forbes, Candice Kumai is a French classically trained chef, 14-time award winning writer, and the youngest chef to compete on the first season of Top Chef.
She’s known for an “east-meets-west” holistic wellness approach that leans into her Japanese heritage and practice of kintsugi––the Japanese art of nourishing, mind, body, and spirit.
Clean Green Eats, features over 100 gluten-free recipes that, while focusing on a plant-based diet, also incorporates high-quality, sensible portions of animal protein.
Candice kicks off with her one-week cleanse, packed with juices, smoothies, and simple meals, then eases the reader into a six-week plan to develop healthy practices that, once established, can last a lifetime.
The Healthy Habit
by Elizabeth Rider
I found Elizabeth Rider after stumbling onto the power of the Medical Medium’s celery juice. I was looking to see if anyone else had success with his suggestions and was led directly to Elizabeth Rider’s story, who, after learning of the Medical Medium and celery juice, used his teachings to manage and cure what was (up until then) undiagnosed Epstein Barr Virus reactivation.
Her healing journey led her to become a holistic nutritionist, and a very good one at that! ElizabethRider.com is my go-to spot for new healthy recipes. I have made it a practice of making her refined-sugar-free desserts for family celebrations (and my private enjoyment). And, she has inspired me to make my own refined-sugar free desserts.
True Story: I also just made, and devoured, her vegan raspberry “cheesecake” for my birthday.
However, prior to making this list, I didn’t know that Elizabeth had a book.
Lucky for us, she does! The Healthy Habit.
Though this is the only recommended book on the list that I don’t own, I’m such an Elizabeth Rider fan, that I recommend The Healthy Habit with confidence.
The book includes a 28-Day Kick-Start Plan, 50 recipes, and online community.
