Non-Toxic Nail Polish | Gel, Long-Lasting, Quick Drying, and More

3 Rows of non-toxic and toxin free nail polishes from the brands Dazzle Dry, Olive and June, and Manicurist Paris

You want to talk instant mood lift

––it’s a glance down at a freshly manicured hand or perfectly pedicured feet.  Whether rocking a fabulous lewk, or holding on by a “haven’t showered in three days” thread––that glance is a quiet and luxurious reminder of the woman I happily am in my heart.

I even remember the feeling the first time I got “gel” nails. When I was immediately able to pull my debit card out of my wallet without smudging or chipping or anything––color me hooked!  It may as well have been a Mars landing, I was in such awe.

But when I got serious about going low-tox, I had to face the fact that my mood-elevating self-care-practice polish jobs could be poisoning my hormones and hijacking my health.

And I was right.

Read on to learn how toxic conventional nail polishes can be and what you can use instead.

What Makes Nail Polish Toxic

So, I have a question for you: Have you ever stopped to think about what’s actually in your nail polish? Behind the glossy exterior, many traditional formulas hide harmful ingredients that can pose risks to your health, the environment, and even the people applying the polish. Let’s break it down and see what makes nail polish toxic and why switching to safer alternatives is worth considering.

Common Toxic Ingredients

Many nail polishes on the market contain chemical ingredients that are anything but harmless. These ingredients may improve polish performance or shelf life, but they’re running roughshod over your hormones and health. Here are some of the most common toxic offenders:

  • Formaldehyde: Known for its role in embalming, formaldehyde is often used in nail hardeners. It’s a known carcinogen linked to Leukemia. It can cause skin irritation. High-level exposure can cause breathing issues. And it’s linked to detrimental effects upon developing fetuses, potentially leading to fetal malformations.

  • Toluene: This chemical helps create a smooth application, but it’s a problem for your nervous system. Prolonged exposure can cause headaches, dizziness, or damage to your liver and kidneys.

  • Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP): Added to make polishes flexible and prevent chipping, DBP is linked to hormone disruption and is part of a group of chemicals often associated with reproductive issues.

  • Camphor: While it might make your polish shiny, inhaling large amounts of camphor can cause dizziness or nausea and, in severe cases, seizures.  Long-term exposure may even result in liver damage.

These ingredients are just the tip of the iceberg. Others, like xylene and ethyl tosylamide often sneak into formulas, adding more risks.

The bottom line––if you’re using conventional nail polish, which you probably are if you’re getting salon manicures and pedicures, you could be causing detrimental damage to your health and, if you’re pregnant, your unborn child’s health.

The Good News?

Today, having a beautiful, luxurious, high-performing polish-job doesn’t have to be at the expense of your well-being.  There have been so many advancements in non-toxic nail polishes and nail care systems.  Let’s look at the health benefits of going “free.”

The Beauty of Being “Free”

When a nail polish has a number followed by a “dash” and “free”, it refers to the number of potentially harmful chemicals that are excluded from the formula.  For instance, "3-free" typically means the polish is formulated without, or is “free” of three toxic chemicals:  dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, and formaldehyde.

Let’s break down these “free” designations:

  • 3-Free: Excludes: DBP, toluene, and formaldehyde.

  • 5-Free: Excludes all of the "3-free" chemicals, plus formaldehyde resin and camphor.

In my opinion, at the very least, you should insist upon 5-free nail polishes and products.

  • 7-Free: Excludes all of the “5-free” chemicals and adds ethyl tosylamide and xylene.

  • 15-Free: Excludes all of the “7-free” chemicals and adds the exclusion of a slew of additional problematic ingredients.  As all of the nail polishes on today’s list are 15-free, we’re going to go deeper into that designation now.

Here’s a look at some chemicals excluded in 15-Free nail polishes:

  • Formaldehyde

  • Formaldehyde Resin

  • Toluene

  • Phthalates

  • Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP)

  • Camphor

  • Triphenyl Phosphate (TPHP)

  • Acetone

  • Bisphenol-A

  • Parabens

  • Nonylphenol Ethoxylate

  • Xylene

  • Ethyl Tosylamide

  • Sulphate

  • Animal-Derived Ingredients

What About HEMA-Free?

HEMA (Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate) is a chemical commonly used in nail gels and some nail polish formulas, especially in products that bond or extend nails. While it helps enhance durability and adhesion, it’s also one of the biggest culprits when it comes to allergic reactions. HEMA exposure can inflame your skin, causing redness, itchiness, or even eczema-like symptoms.

Why should you avoid it? If you’ve ever experienced irritation around your nails or fingertips after a manicure, HEMA could be to blame. This is especially important for people with sensitive skin or those who frequently use gel nails, as prolonged exposure increases your risk of an allergic reaction. By choosing "HEMA-Free" products, you’re prioritizing your skin health without compromising on beautiful nails.

Labels like HEMA-Free and 15-Free aren’t just trendy—they’re important for your health and the environment. These formulas prove that you don’t need to compromise safety for style. You can have gorgeous nails without exposing yourself to unnecessary risks or harsh chemicals.

Let’s learn more about non-toxic nail polish alternatives.

Exploring Non-Toxic Nail Polish Brands

Switching to non-toxic nail polish doesn't mean giving up great shades or long-lasting formulas. Some brands go above and beyond to create safe, high-quality options that rival (or even outperform) traditional polishes. Let’s take a closer look at three standout brands: Olive and June, Manucurist Paris, and Dazzle Dry

Why Olive and June Stands Out

Olive and June has quickly become a favorite in the world of non-toxic nail care, and it’s easy to see why. They are committed to creating high-performance nail polishes that are HEMA-free, 15-free, cruelty-free, and affordable. Whether you're looking for soft pastels, bold brights, or timeless neutrals, Olive and June offers plenty of shades to suit your mood (or your outfit).

And, they come in gel!

In this video, I share my thoughts on their at-home gel care system.

(You can grab a system for 30% off using the coupon code MANI30.)

Overall, I find the Olive and June system to be very user-friendly.  They even designed a polish bottle handle that makes application easier and more precise––the Poppy. Plus, they have great “How To” videos.

Along with their mani and pedi systems and nail polishes, Olive and June has a range of nail care products, including a great cuticle serum and a gel soak-off system that I absolutely love.

And, their products are reasonably priced, making them accessible without sacrificing quality.

Manucurist Paris: A Blend of Safety and Elegance

This is the first non-toxic at-home gel system I ever heard of, thanks to the lovely Josie. I saw one of her videos covering the brand and was instantly intrigued.

If you’ve ever dreamed of a chic, Parisian-style manicure without harmful ingredients, look no further than Manucurist Paris. This brand is redefining nail care by combining luxe aesthetics with plant-based, non-toxic formulas.

Their nail polishes are HEMA-free and 15-free, so you don’t have to second-guess what’s inside the bottle. But, what’s really unique about Manucurist Paris is their use of bio-sourced ingredients

Instead of relying on synthetic chemicals, their formulas embrace plant-based alternatives derived from potatoes, wheat, and cassava. It’s a creative way of making polishes that are both effective and eco-friendly, meaning, gentle on your skin, and the planet.

And, like Olive and June, they offer a range of nail care products like cuticle oils and nail serums, all crafted with the same clean ethos.

Dazzle Dry: Nail Polish That Goes the Extra Mile

You know how frustrating it is to wait forever for your nails to dry, only to smudge them at the last second? Dazzle Dry’s innovative, 15-free, vegan, and non-toxic polish hardens in just five minutes. Seriously, five minutes.

But speed isn’t their only selling point. If you’re someone who hates constant touch-ups, you’ll love how their manicures can last up to two weeks without chipping. For a non-gel formulation, that’s impressive.

The four-step system includes a nail prep, base coat, vibrant polish, and a fast-drying top coat—all designed to work together for a flawless, long-lasting finish.

It’s proof that clean beauty doesn’t mean sacrificing performance—or the durability that most people expect from pro-level polishes.

These brands showcase just how far non-toxic nail care has come. So, whether you value variety, elegance, or performance, there’s a perfect polish waiting for you—no compromises, no harsh chemicals, just gorgeous nails.

A Safer Future

Empowering Consumers with Safe Beauty Standards

The beauty industry evolves based on what you demand as a consumer. When you choose non-toxic, HEMA-free, or 15-free options, you’re sending a clear message: Safer, cleaner beauty products matter. That pressure pushes companies to adopt better practices and improve their formulations.

Plus, their transparency in labeling (15-free, cruelty-free, and vegan) makes it easier for you to hold them—and other brands—accountable.

Bottom line, when you choose these better-for-you products, you’re setting a higher bar for the industry. You’re helping shift standards so that fewer harmful products hit the shelves and more companies get on board with safer formulation practices. The empowering truth is this:  Your choices can drive real change.

At the end of the day, switching to non-toxic nail polish is about more than just high gloss on your nails. It’s about making a statement—with your health, your values, and your purchasing power. Every bottle of non-toxic polish you buy is a vote for a healthier you, a cleaner planet, and an industry where safe beauty is the norm, not an exception.

Conclusion

Switching to non-toxic, HEMA-free, and 15-free nail polish is a small change that makes a big difference. It's about protecting your health, supporting eco-friendly practices, and choosing products that align with your values.

You don’t need to settle for formulas filled with harmful chemicals when brands like Olive and June, Manucurist Paris, and Dazzle Dry offer stunning, safe alternatives.

Today, having beautiful, luxurious, high-quality nails doesn’t have to be at the expense of your well-being.

So make the switch, your nails—and your health—will thank you.
